Vetting Centers and Charities
What:
One Acre Fund supplies smallholder farmers with financing and training to help them grow their way out of poverty and hunger. Instead of giving food, One Acre Fund invests in people to give them the ability to operate their own farm and generate independent income. One Acre Fund’s model uses four approaches. The first utilizes Asset-Based Loans, where farmers receive high-quality seeds and fertilizer on credit with a flexible repayment system. The second is an effective delivery system that distributes inputs to locations within walking distance to every farmer. The third is training farmers on modern agricultural techniques. And the fourth is market facilitation, which includes things like offering crop storage solutions and teaching farmers about market fluctuations.
Where:
One Acre Fund serves farmers in Burundi, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Why:
One Acre Fund addresses the irony that the majority of the world’s hungriest people are farmers. More than 50 million smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa are locked in annual cycles of hunger because they are unable to grow the necessary food to sustain a family. Farmers and their families suffer from malnutrition, which has lifelong effects. Yet, when farmers prosper, their respective communities tend to prosper as well. If farmers have extra income, they often invest in education, businesses, and the community. Furthermore, sustainable farms and farming techniques will benefit future generations.
