Vetting Centers and Charities
What:
Oxfam is a global organization that focuses on attacking the underlying causes and conditions of poverty. This approach replaces others such as providing the distribution of material goods. Oxfam’s major interventions focus on aiding poor communities after natural disasters, changing the laws and practices that keep communities trapped in poverty, and educating communities on how to address poverty.
Where:
Oxfam has global headquarters in Boston and additional offices in Washington DC, Senegal, Ethiopia, Sudan, Cambodia, El Salvador, and Peru.
Why:
Nearly one out of every three people live in poverty. The good news is that the portion of people that live in extreme poverty, which is considered as living on less than $1.90 a day, has been halved in just the past 15 years. Organizations like Oxfam look to further reduce this number by providing long-term solutions to chronic poverty. Oxfam believes that poverty is a problem rooted in injustice and can be solved by addressing it as such.
